Do You Need a Spanish Bank Account?
A Spanish bank account is not legally required on day one, but in practice you will need one very quickly. Spanish landlords almost universally require a Spanish IBAN for rent payments. Utility companies, the Hacienda (tax authority) and social security all prefer or require direct debit from a Spanish account. If you are on a visa that requires proof of funds, a Spanish account also demonstrates you have settled finances in the country.
The good news: you can set up a digital account (Wise, Revolut, N26) before you leave the UK without a NIE, giving you a European IBAN from day one. Then open a traditional Spanish account once you have your NIE.
Traditional Spanish Banks vs Digital Banks
The choice comes down to what you need the account for and where you are in the relocation process.

Traditional Bank vs Digital Bank: Which to Choose?
| Feature | Traditional Spanish Bank | Digital Bank (Wise/Revolut) |
|---|---|---|
| NIE required | Yes (for resident account) | No |
| Spanish IBAN | Yes (ES…) | Wise: Yes / Revolut: Yes (LT…) / N26: No (DE…) |
| Accepted by landlords | Always | Usually Wise/Revolut; sometimes refused |
| Monthly fees | €0–€15 depending on account | Free (standard plans) |
| GBP→EUR transfers | Poor rates, high fees | Excellent rates, low fees |
| Mortgage eligibility | Yes | No |
| ATM withdrawals in Spain | Free at own network | Free up to monthly limit |
| Open from the UK | No (requires branch visit in Spain) | Yes |
Recommended approach: Open Wise or Revolut in the UK before you move. This gives you a European IBAN for receiving initial payments. Once in Spain with your NIE, open a BBVA or Santander account for everyday Spanish banking, direct debits and any future mortgage.
What You Need to Open a Spanish Bank Account
Requirements vary slightly between banks, but for a standard resident account you will need:
Required Documents
- NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) — your Spanish tax identification number. This is the most important document and a prerequisite at all traditional banks.
- Valid passport — your current UK passport.
- Proof of Spanish address — a padron certificate (empadronamiento) from your local ayuntamiento, or a recent utility bill in your name.
- Proof of income or financial means — payslips, pension statements, or your most recent tax return. Some banks accept a bank statement showing regular income.
- TIE card (if already issued) — your biometric residency card may be requested but is not always required if you have your NIE.
Step-by-Step: Opening a Spanish Bank Account
Get your NIE first
Apply for your NIE at a Spanish consulate in the UK or at a National Police station (Comisaría) in Spain. Without it, your options are limited to digital banks and non-resident accounts. See our NIE & TIE guide for full details.
Open a digital account as a bridge
While waiting for your NIE, open Wise or Revolut using just your UK passport. This gives you a working European IBAN for rent, transfers and early utility setup.
Register on the padron
Visit your local ayuntamiento (town hall) and register as a resident. The padron certificate this generates is essential proof of address for your bank application.
Book a branch appointment
Most traditional Spanish banks require an in-branch visit to open an account. Some (BBVA in particular) allow you to start the process online, but you will still need to visit a branch to verify your identity.
Submit your documents
Bring all required documents to your branch appointment. Bank staff will photocopy everything and submit your application. Processing takes 1–5 working days.
Set up your direct debits
Once your account is open, set up direct debits for rent, electricity, water, gas, and any Spanish subscriptions. Spanish banks charge fees for failed direct debits, so ensure funds are available.
Can You Keep Your UK Bank Account?
Yes — UK expats can usually keep their existing UK bank accounts after moving to Spain. However, policies vary significantly between banks. Some UK banks will restrict or close non-resident accounts; others are happy to serve customers abroad. It is worth checking your bank's policy before you move.
Reasons to keep it
- Receive UK State Pension or government pension
- Collect rental income from UK property
- Access UK savings and ISAs
- HMRC refunds paid to UK account
Things to watch
- Some banks close non-resident accounts
- Foreign ATM fees can add up
- Must declare if balance exceeds €50,000 (Modelo 720)
- Exchange rate risk on GBP funds
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Trying to open a traditional account before getting your NIE. You will almost always be turned away. Get your NIE first, use Wise in the meantime.
- Not checking if your UK bank accepts non-residents. Barclays, HSBC and Lloyds have all restricted non-resident accounts in recent years. Call before you move.
- Using your UK debit card for large EUR payments. UK bank exchange rates are poor. Use Wise for GBP→EUR conversions and save significantly.
- Forgetting Modelo 720. As a Spanish tax resident, you must declare UK bank accounts with balances exceeding €50,000. See our Spain Tax Guide.
- Missing direct debit payments. Spanish banks charge return fees (typically €3–€10 per failed debit). Keep a buffer in your Spanish account.
