The Basics

What Is Spain's Non-Lucrative Visa?

The Non-Lucrative Visa (Visado de Residencia No Lucrativa) allows non-EU nationals, including British citizens post-Brexit, to live in Spain long-term without working. It is specifically designed for people who can financially support themselves through pensions, savings, rental income, investments or other passive income sources.

It is the most popular visa route among UK retirees moving to Spain and consistently the most applied-for Spanish long-stay visa among British nationals. You cannot work in Spain on this visa — not even remotely. If you want to work, see the Digital Nomad Visa or Autónomo Visa.

No work permitted: The Non-Lucrative Visa strictly prohibits any form of gainful employment or professional activity in Spain — including remote work for foreign employers or clients. Violation can result in visa revocation.

Application

Step-by-Step Application Process

1

Demonstrate your income or savings

Gather 3–6 months of bank statements, pension letters, investment statements or rental income evidence showing €27,800+/year. A letter from your bank or financial adviser confirming funds can strengthen the application.

2

Get your ACRO criminal record certificate

Apply at the ACRO Criminal Records Office website. Allow 4–6 weeks. Once received, get it apostilled by the FCDO. It must be issued within 3 months of your consulate appointment date.

3

Obtain private health insurance

Purchase a qualifying Spanish health insurance policy or apply for an S1 if you are a UK State Pension recipient. The policy must cover you fully in Spain with no co-payments.

4

Get certified Spanish translations

All documents not in Spanish must be translated by a sworn translator. Your agrin.uk consultant will coordinate this for you.

5

Book a Spanish Consulate appointment

Book at the Spanish Consulate in London, Edinburgh or Manchester depending on your region. Bring originals and copies of all documents on the day.

6

Complete the Modelo Nacional application form

Fill in the national visa application form for the Non-Lucrative Visa. Your agrin.uk consultant will review it before submission to ensure accuracy.

7

Await processing (1–3 months)

The consulate reviews your application. Processing is slower than the Digital Nomad Visa. Once approved, you have 1 month to enter Spain and activate the visa.

8

Arrive and register your TIE and Padrón

Within 30 days of arrival, register at the Oficina de Extranjería for your TIE card and at the Ayuntamiento for your Padrón. See the NIE & TIE guide.

Non-Lucrative Visa Spain — Questions Answered

How much money do I need for Spain's Non-Lucrative Visa?
For 2026, you need approximately €27,800/year for the main applicant (400% of Spain's IPREM indicator). Each additional adult family member adds €6,950/year. Each child adds €3,475/year. This income can come from pensions, savings, investments or other passive sources — not work.
Can I work on a Non-Lucrative Visa in Spain?
No. The Non-Lucrative Visa explicitly prohibits any gainful employment or professional activity in Spain. This includes remote work for foreign companies or clients. If you want to work, the Digital Nomad Visa (remote workers) or Autónomo Visa (self-employed) would be appropriate alternatives.
How long is Spain's Non-Lucrative Visa valid?
The initial visa is valid for 1 year. It renews for 2 years, then another 2 years. After 5 years of continuous legal residence you qualify for long-term (permanent) residency with no further renewals needed. After 10 years, you can apply for Spanish citizenship.
Can I include my partner and children?
Yes. A spouse or partner and dependent children under 18 can be included in the Non-Lucrative Visa application as dependents. Each additional adult requires an extra ~€6,950/year in demonstrated income.
Do I need private health insurance?
Yes, unless you are a UK State Pension recipient who qualifies for the S1 healthcare scheme. The S1 form allows you to access Spanish public healthcare funded by the UK government. If you don't qualify for an S1, you must have private health insurance covering Spain with no co-payments and no exclusions. Ask agrin.uk whether an S1 applies to your situation.
Will I become a Spanish tax resident?
If you spend more than 183 days per year in Spain (which you must to maintain the visa), you become a Spanish tax resident. This means declaring worldwide income to the Spanish tax authority (AEAT). Spain has a double taxation agreement with the UK, so income is not taxed twice — but professional tax advice is strongly recommended before you move.
